HDR brachytherapy, for surface treatment of skin cancer using the innovative Leipzig and Valencia applicators offer an effective alternative to other treatment modalities for small superficial skin carcinomas. Patients’ setup and reproducibility is accurate, and treatment time is short for added patient convenience.


The use of Leipzig or Valencia applicators is a successful alternative to electron beam irradiation in the treatment of superficial skin cancers. It is applicable for skin and surface, intra-oral, and vaginal cuff treatment, and particularly useful for treating lesions located around the eyelids, or the ear and nose where electron applicator treatment is not suitable to setup and perform.

The use of Leipzig or Valencia applicators is also particularly indicated for tumors of small size and shallow depth. These cup-shaped applicators limit the irradiation to the required area using tungsten shielding and are designed to treat to the correct depth without overexposing the skin, yielding good local control rates accompanied by excellent cosmetic and functional results.


The Leipzig Applicator Set
The Leipzig applicators were developed in collaboration with the University of Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany. A set of six applicators is commercially available, with inner diameters of 1, 2, and 3 cm, in which the source has either a parallel or perpendicular orientation with respect to the treatment surface. The applicators are provided with a protective plastic cap, in contact with the surface of the skin.
