Nucletron B.V. Veenendaal, Nucletron congratulates Professor Dimos Baltas and Dr Christos Kolotas from the Strahlenklinik, Offenbach, Germany. They recently received the Hermann-Holthusen award for their work entitled "3D CT-based Interstitial Brachytherapy: The Offenbach System. Technical Developments, Clinical Applications and Results". This was the first time that the award has been made by the DEGRO, the German Association for Radiation Oncology. Professor Baltas and Dr Kolotas became involved in the field of CT-based brachytherapy, including CT-guided catheter implantation, CT-based catheter reconstruction and target volume based treatment planning and optimisation, in 1994. Since then, the new technique has been developed and used clinically to treat more than 800 patients. Nucletron and the Strahlenklinik, Offenbach, headed by Prof. Nikolaos Zamboglou, co-operate in the development of Imaging-based brachytherapy techniques and software tools for treatment planning, including dosimetry. Part of the outcome of their research is already included in the PLATO Brachytherapy Planning System.
