Nucletron congratulates Mr. Tero Vatanen, winner of The ESTRO - Jack Fowler, University of Wisconsin Award
October 9 2006
Oncentra is a Trade Mark of Nucletron B.V.
Nucletron congratulates Mr Tero Vatanen from Kuopio university Hospital, Kuopio, Finland on winning the 2006 ESTRO - Jack Fowler University of Wisconsin Award.
The award was for Tero Vatanan’s abstract entitled ‘A new add-on electron MuLti-Leaf collimation (eMLc): dosimetry and dose calculation using a new Beam model with the Voxel Monte Carlo’. The abstract was created in collaboration with Erik Traneus (Nucletron) and Tapani Lahtinen, from Kuopio University Hospital, Kuopio, Finland.
The prize will be presented during the ESTRO 2006 meeting in Leipzig at the award lecture sessions on Wednesday, October 11 during which Tero Vatanen will give a presentation on the project.
Tero Vatanen, Erik Traneus and Tapani Lahtinen will address this topic in two other ESTRO sessions. The first occasion will be at the treatment planning session in their presentation Beam Model for Mutli-Leaf Collimated High Energy Electron Beams. The second one will be the poster session on new technology: Electron MLC (eMLc) may replace traditional Bolus in electron beam radiotherapy.
In their work Vatanen et al explore the potential of the electron beam model and the VMC++ dose engine, implemented in Oncentra MasterPlan, by extending the use of electrons from field-shaping using standard applicators with insert to field shaping using a multi-leaf collimator. This new concept has been implemented in Nucletron’s Oncentra MasterPlan™ multimodality treatment planning system, which can be seen in figure 1. The dosimetric validation was performed by Tero Vatanen and Tapani Lahtinen for an electron MLC prototype developed at the Kuopio University Hospital in Finland.

Nucletron is a knowledge-based leader in Radiation Oncology and works with the clinical team to realize innovative solutions for improving patient care. The collaborative project by Tero Vatanen, Tapani Lahtinen and Erik Traneus (lead researcher at Nucletron in the area of electron radiotherapy) using Oncentra MasterPlan™ enables the exploration of innovative techniques for radiotherapy cancer treatments. The ESTRO Board’s decision to honour Tero Vatanen with The Jack Fowler, University of Wisconsin Award underscores the success of these kind of partnerships.
The Oncentra MasterPlan platform provides software solutions for easy and intuitive information management and data-intensive radiotherapy processes in multimodality and comparative planning. At the same time, Oncentra MasterPlan can also serve as a research platform that enables clinicians and researches to develop breakthrough techniques for radiotherapy cancer treatments.
