Vendor Independent and Flexible Solution offering lightning fast calculations

CHICAGO (November 1, 2009) — During the first day of the annual conference for the American Society for Radiation Oncology  (ASTRO) in Chicago, Nucletron, a knowledge-based leader in radiation oncology, introduced the new Oncentra® VMAT treatment planning solution for rotational therapy. Oncentra VMAT is a truly independent and fully open rotational planning solution within the Oncentra External Beam treatment planning system. Oncentra External Beam supports image-guided photon, electron and proton treatment planning. Oncentra planning environment is a fully DICOM compliant treatment planning system.

“Nucletron believes that physicians should have the freedom to choose their patient-planning environment irrespective of the treatment delivery vendor,” said Jos Lamers, chief executive officer of Nucletron. “The recent addition enabling volumetric modulated arc therapy to the Oncentra treatment planning system reinforces the multimodality planning capability of Oncentra that includes brachytherapy and external beam treatments as well.”

The open and flexible architecture provides independence and allows for lightning fast calculation times when creating VMAT plans to be delivered on either a Varian or an Elekta treatment unit. In a recent study conducted in the United Kingdom at the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, using three clinical cases, Oncentra demonstrated the shortest planning times for rotational therapy in a side-by-side comparison conducted with two other popular treatment planning systems.

The study used the same patient data and state of the art Hardware for the systems compared. Plans with single or dual arc rotations for two prostate and one Head and Neck case were used. Evaluated was the time needed for one full optimization and one final dose calculation. This study found Oncentra to be the fastest system of the three. In specific cases Oncentra proved to be 3 times faster than other treatment planning systems.

The study also compared in the same way the times for doing IMRT planning using the same patient data and Oncentra once again was shown to be the fastest system.

Oncentra VMAT will be on display for demonstration during ASTRO’s annual conference November 1-5 in the Nucletron Booth, # 3236.
