Veenendaal, 17th December 2003 – Nucletron BV has announced that it has signed a Letter of Intent with RaySearch Laboratories AB to negotiate a long-term agreement for the integration and licensing of RaySearch’s IMRT optimization software. The intended agreement will allow Nucletron to integrate RaySearch's ORBIT optimization modules and future developments as part of its Oncentra® Treatment Planning (OTP) software.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy is an advanced method of cancer treatment that allows higher radiation doses to be delivered to a tumor while reducing side effects in healthy tissue. Planning for IMRT requires highly sophisticated optimization methods to create treatments tailored to individual patients’ anatomy. RaySearch Laboratories is regarded as a leading specialist in the field of IMRT optimization, and the integration with Nucletron’s Oncentra Treatment Planning system will provide a unique combination for advanced clinical radiation therapy.

Oncentra Treatment Planning is the latest generation planning system and is a key component of the Oncentra™ Information Management (OIM) suite of products. The combination of OTP’s advanced multi-modality image handling, contouring and radiation dose algorithms with ORBIT IMRT optimization will provide users with an unequaled functionality and performance.

Rudolf Scholte, President & CEO of Nucletron B.V., stated, “The ORBIT modules complement perfectly the strengths of OTP and will provide hospitals and clinics world-wide with exceptional support for their IMRT cancer treatment programmes.” He further remarked that the intention to finalize an Agreement with RaySearch did not affect in any way the IMRT planning solution in OTP’s sister product PLATO™.

Johan Löf, President and CEO of RaySearch Laboratories AB, said, “We are looking forward to the future collaboration with Nucletron. Our business model is based on that our plug-in software is brought into clinical use through partnerships with leading suppliers of treatment planning systems. Nucletron is undoubtedly a most suitable partner and together we will be able to build competitive IMRT software.”
