Veenendaal, the Netherlands – Nucletron B.V. announces the release of new Inverse Planning Module. This new module generates an optimal treatment plan in less than a minute, saving  precious operating room time.  Inverse planning is the latest component of the SPOT PRO™ treatment planning system for permanent seed implants.

Inverse planning enables fast plan adjustments allowing for intra-active, planning to take place during the procedure.  The rule-based algorithm takes into account both the prescription to the target as well as dose sparing of the critical organs.  Nucletron is setting a new standard in Permanent Seed Treatment Planning with Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) like results.

“The new Inverse Planning module in SPOT PRO is a perfect tool for OR plan generation, when combined with 3D Ultrasound imaging, live needle guidance and automated seed delivery, the new module enables fast plan adjustments and dynamic planning, i.e. true adaptive image guided prostate brachytherapy,” says Dr. L. Beaulieu, Physicist, Department de radio-oncology, physics and research de, University Laval, Hotel Dieu de Quebec, Quebec city, Quebec, Canada.

SPOT PRO is a comprehensive planning system for all seed implant techniques, covering all planning aspects, including pre-planning, intra-operative live-planning using live image information, and post treatment dosimetry. SPOT PRO is based on extensive collaboration with a number of clinical sites in both the USA and in Europe.

Particular attention to workflow during the intra-operative live-planning process has resulted in an easy and more efficient planning approach shortening the overall treatment time.

SPOT PRO, with inverse planning will be exhibited at the ASTRO 2004 Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia and customer shipments will commence in the fourth quarter of 2004.

SPOT PRO is available as a stand-alone treatment planning system for all manual seed implant techniques, and can also be integrated into the Nucletron FIRST™ System (Fully Integrated Real-Time Seed Treatment), the world’s first automated system for seed implant procedures. When utilizing SPOT PRO with FIRST, clinicians will benefit by having needle guidance and plan optimization as an integrated part of seed treatment.
