COLUMBIA, MD (February 11, 2008)— Nucletron, a knowledge-based leader in the practice of radiation oncology, has announced three new products designed to improve brachytherapy practice.  The new devices include the Valencia™ applicator, Source Position Check Ruler and the CT/MR Compatible Applicator Clamp and Base Plate.  All are cleared for release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Ministry of Health.

“The new brachytherapy applicator, clamp, and check ruler will improve patient treatment and outcomes for centers using Nucletron’s family of afterloaders,” said Jeroen Cammeraat, chief operating officer of Nucletron.  “We continue to expand our brachytherapy offerings by introducing new accessories that enable radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists and technicians to significantly increase efficiency and quality assurance in the treatment setting.”

Each year, more than a million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed globally, making it a serious public health concern.  Designed for use in brachytherapy treatment of small superficial malignancies, the new Valencia Applicator features a unique and patented flattening filter that ensures a higher degree of dose homogeneity than previously possible with surface applicators.  With the Leipzig and Freiburg Flap™ applicators, the Valencia has allowed Nucletron to further its position in offering the world’s broadest set of tools for the treatment of skin cancer.

The new Source Position Check Ruler, with GAFChromic® film, is an important quality assurance (QA) tool that is setting a new standard for ensuring the proper calibration and operation of a Nucletron brachytherapy system prior to usage for optimal patient treatment.

Nucletron has also announced the new CT/MR Compatible Applicator Clamp and Baseplate.  Designed for use in an MR environment, this device permits the optimal stabilization of CT/MR compatible applicators as well as virtually all other Nucletron body-site solutions and applicators.  The clamp’s full range of motion allows for simplified patient setup for each treatment fraction.  The rugged titanium construction and hydraulic-free design allows for simple cleaning and sterilization.
