Veenendaal, The Netherlands,–  Hotel-Dieu Quebec, The University Hospital Center of Quebec (CHUQ) have furthered the development and adoption of Image Guided Brachytherapy methods for the treatment of Prostate Cancer utilizing Nucletron’s FIRST System for permanent prostate seed implants.

With Nucletron’s FIRST system, the clinician can see for the first time the effect of the seed implant procedure, and make adjustments where necessary in the plan. Optimized treatment can be delivered immediately, making the planning and treatment one single, integrated and high quality procedure.

“We congratulate CHUQ on the significant accomplishment of eliminating patient delay for prostate implants and on the occasion of treating their 1000th prostate brachytherapy patient,” stated Jeroen Cammeraat, President of Nucletron Corporation.  “Over 200 patients were recently treated with Nucletron’s Fully Integrated Real-time Seed Treatment (FIRST) System. Collaboration between CHUQ and Nucletron has led to the adoption of clinical techniques that utilize FIRST to improve the planning and delivery of permanent seed implants,” Mr. Cammeraat added.

Cancer treatment is in constant evolution and the practice of prostate implants is not an exception. Since Dr. Jean Roy established prostate implants at CHUQ, the technique has continued to evolve. Now, Drs Éric Vigneault and André-Guy Martin have continued to improve the technique from manual source delivery to automated delivery; and from manual dosimetry planning to inverse planning. They have inspired others to establish this practice in other regions.

Nucletron’s FIRST System is comprised of SPOT PRO™, the unique mobile 3D planning system, which offers live-planning with 3D needle guidance and real-time dosimetry updates. Ideal for the treatment planning of permanent seed implants, seedSelectron® automatically delivers the seeds to match this ‘live-plan' – without delay and without extra radiation exposure.
