Nucletron B V, Veenendaal. The Netherlands, an international leader in radiotherapy announces that California Endocurietherapy Medical Corporation (CET) has reached the 10,000th treatment fraction plateau. On January 12, 2001, CET reached a major milestone giving their 10,000th high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) treatment fraction. CET 's first treatment fraction was given on July 12, 1991. "CET has made a difference in improving the quality of life for its patients. Developing treatment protocols that allow patients in many cases to go about their daily life while being treated. CET has been providing high dose brachytherapy treatments for more than 10 years in the Oakland, California area and around the country," stated Rudolf Scholte, Managing Director of Nucletron. During a recent ceremony held by Nucletron celebrating CET's safe and effective practice, Doctors Demanes and Rodriguez spoke about the efficiency of HDR: "High dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) is a time-tested and safe method that allows physicians to treat cancer with greater precision and less trauma to the patient. This procedure gives physicians and patients the significant advantage of applying a higher dose of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing healthy tissue and surrounding organs. As a result, this course of treatment is much shorter and more comfortable than other cancer treatments, and is often performed on an outpatient basis." About California Endocurietherapy Corporation California Endocurietherapy Cancer Center (CET) is a unique medical practice, offering a widely applicable and effective cancer treatment program. CET specialists are highly trained and experienced in brachytherapy (the surgical placement of radioactive material directly into malignant tumors). CET employs state-of-the-art technology and is actively engaged in the development of new brachytherapy techniques to treat cancer. Located in Oakland, California, CET was established in 1982 by D. Jeffrey Demanes, M.D., who trained under Dr. Nisar Syed, a pioneer in endocurietherapy. Dr. Demanes was joined by Rodney Rodriguez, Ph.D., M.D., whose expertise also includes tumor biology. Nucletron, the manufacturer of the microSelectron-HDR remote afterloader, has designated CET as a physician and brachytherapy physicist training site and as a development center for new cancer treatment technologies.
