Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists Treats Its 28th Patient Using AccuBoost® Image-Guided HDR Breast Brachytherapy Technology

High Success Rate Leads to Expansion of State-of-the-Art Irradiation Program

COLUMBIA, MD (April 28, 2010) — Nucletron, a knowledge-based leader in radiation oncology, today announced that Arizona Breast Cancer Specialists (ABCs) has treated its 28th patient using the AccuBoost® powered by Nucletron image-guided breast irradiation technology.  ABCs is one of several cancer centers in the U.S. utilizing the AccuBoost technology to successfully treat breast cancer.

The AccuBoost system is an advanced non-invasive outpatient procedure that treats breast cancer by accurately targeting the boost dose to a lumpectomy site via real-time mammography image guidance and  Nucletron’s microSelectron® high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy afterloader treatment delivery solution. Clinical reports indicate that patients with early stage breast cancer have positive outcomes when treatment involves a full course of whole breast irradiation and boost brachytherapy following a lumpectomy procedure.  By increasing the accuracy of the dose-targeting and reducing the exposure to healthy tissue, AccuBoost improves patient outcomes and minimizes side effects.

The success of the AccuBoost treatment technology has led ABCs to expand the program, adding an AccuBoost system at their North Phoenix facility to meet the needs of more patients.

The treatment has been available at ABCs’ Scottsdale location since August, 2009.“We are so pleased with the results we’ve seen so far we want to make the AccuBoost treatment option available to as many women as we can,” said Coral Quiet, M.D., co-founder of ABCs.  “This non-invasive conformal image-guided brachytherapy technique allows the delivery of the radiation dose directly to the cancer site while sparing healthy tissue.  Now more of our patients will have access to the many benefits the AccuBoost technology offers.”

Dr. Quiet, along with Robert Kuske, M.D., both nationally recognized radiation oncologists specializing in breast cancer, founded ABCs in 2009.  It is the first and only radiation oncology practice devoted exclusively to women with breast cancer.  Drs. Quiet and Kuske, along with colleague Dr. Farley Yang, were recently named three of the top 15 radiation oncologists by Phoenix magazine’s survey of 5,000 area physicians (April 2010).

AccuBoost® powered by Nucletron will be on display and available for demonstration during the 2010 ABS annual meeting in Atlanta April 29 through May 1 in Booth #123 and #127.
