Major Swedish University Hospital Chooses Independent and Flexible Oncentra VMAT Planning Solution from Nucletron

Uppsala (November 24, 2009) — Uppsala Academic Hospital has chosen Oncentra VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) as their planning software for future VMAT treatments. The hospital has 2 Elekta and 1 General Electric linear accelerator, plus one additional Elekta Synergy that is currently being installed.

Before selecting Oncentra VMAT, the clinic went through an extensive evaluation of all treatment planning solutions currently available on the market.

“Our main reasons to choose Oncentra VMAT were the quality of the plans and the speed. During one of the evaluation demonstrations, Nucletron was provided a complex head and neck case and we were truly impressed how quick and easy it was to achieve a good plan with Oncentra VMAT” remarked Ulf Isacsson, chief physicist of Uppsala Academic Hospital.

“We are honoured and excited that Uppsala Academic hospital has chosen to partner with Nucletron for VMAT planning software on their new Elekta Synergy accelerator. Nucletron believes that clinicians should have the freedom to choose their patient-planning environment irrespective of the treatment delivery vendor,” said Jos Lamers, chief executive officer of Nucletron. “The availability of functionality for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy in the Oncentra treatment planning system reinforces the multimodality planning capability of Oncentra that includes brachytherapy and external beam treatments as well. A recent comparison study performed at a well reputed clinic in the UK also showed that Oncentra VMAT is clearly in the lead when it comes to optimization and dose calculation speed.”

Nucletron, a knowledge-based leader in radiation oncology, introduced the new Oncentra® VMAT treatment planning solution for rotational therapy. Oncentra VMAT is a truly independent and fully open rotational planning solution adding to the Oncentra Dynamic Planning Environment, which offers support for image-guided photon, electron, proton and brachy planning. The open and flexible architecture provides independence and allows for the lightning fast calculation times when creating VMAT plans for any brand of linac.
