The challenges of distance are being overcome in Radiation Therapy departments in two hospitals in Sweden. The University Hospital in Umea and Sundsvall hospital are located 300 kilometres (190 miles) apart, and both clinics have been using the Oncentra electronic patient folder solution to share patient information and documentation such as treatment plans, treatment histories and diagnostic images. “The Oncentra solution provides easy access to the complete radiotherapy patient chart and scheduling electronically which improves efficiency within the whole oncology department”, states Michael Blomquist, hospital physicist at Umea.. “An all-electronic system is also necessary for the radiation collaboration over distance that we have with the Sundsvall clinic, called the Joint center. The replication function of the OIM database assures identical data at both sites. This guarantees access to current data at all times on patients that both sites are involved in the treatment of.” “The Oncentra system provides an excellent foundation for Oncology clinics that demand more from traditional information systems” states Jan-Willem Hazenoot, Oncentra Business Segment Manager for Oncentra.“ The system truly enables clinics to meet their information technology goals as opposed to being restricted. The hospitals in Umea and Sundsvall are prime examples of this type of clinical application of the technology.” The hospitals are physically connected by a 100 megabit per second secure virtual private network connection. Patient information and diagnostic images are transmitted over the connection when requested by a user through Oncentra. Users have access to near real-time information. Patients can be treated at both facilities as clinicians can review all patient plans. Treatment plans are primarily generated in the Umea facility and transferred to the Sundsvall facility. The Oncentra information management system is comprised of several integrated modules including an electronic patient folder, integrated scheduler, record and verify and DICOM archive as well as treatment planning system. It is specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of Oncology clinics. Based on an industry leading technical architecture, the Oncentra system provides clinics worldwide with unprecedented flexibility. About Nucletron B.V.
